In 1969 a devastating hurricane hit the coastal area of Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh, killing half a million people in Noakhali district alone.  U.S. Seventh Fleet went there to rescue people, who the Bangladeshis called “Angels”.  It was like Hurricane Katrina. People called it Qayamat, the apocalypse. I along with some friends raised relief funds to help the victims. I visited the area and I have seen a lot of human suffering.  But nothing prepared me for the devastation I witnessed on this visit.  I have worked to set up schools, so that children in some of the most impoverished communities on earth can have access to a balanced, nonextremist education.
